From Losing Money to 30x: How We Built Metal FX Offroad's Paid Media System from the Ground Up

We rebuilt Google Ads from roughly two dozen overlapping campaigns into a clean, intent-led structure, and we built a full-fledged paid social program on Meta where the creative led with the farm, the founder, and the craft, not the discount. Reach grew, efficiency compounded, and the brand got ahead of a noisy field by sounding unmistakably like itself.

The win here was never a clever campaign. It was infrastructure. Once the feed, the tracking, and the attribution were right, the same ad dollars stopped losing money and started compounding

The win here was never a clever campaign. It was infrastructure. Once the feed, the tracking, and the attribution were right, the same ad dollars stopped losing money and started compounding

The Challenge

Metal FX came to Atelier Commerce without a mature paid program, in one of the most competitive corners of e-commerce.

Ads were losing money. Before the partnership, paid traffic had not been built into a structured growth channel. The business ran mostly as a local store, and there was no active Google Ads program built for profitable e-commerce. Spend was happening without the system needed to make it pay back. No data foundation. There was no engineered product feed, no optimized Merchant Center, and no server-side tracking. Browser-side tracking alone meant cookie loss, ad blockers, and growing bot traffic were distorting the very signals any optimization would depend on. A brutal, high-ticket category. Wheels and wheel-and-tire kits are high-consideration, high-AOV purchases in a market dominated by big brands. Roughly 9 in 10 ranked commercial keywords are high competition, and the most valuable kit terms carry costs of several dollars per click. Winning here demands precision, not volume. A reseller problem. Metal FX is effectively a manufacturer that also sells through resellers. Those resellers were advertising Metal FX products under their own names, sometimes undercutting the official site on Google Shopping, pulling demand, margin, and customer ownership away from the brand. The brief: build the entire paid media foundation, make tracking trustworthy, give Google clean and structured product data, and turn money-losing advertising into a profitable, scalable system across Google and Meta.

The brief: build the entire paid media foundation, make tracking trustworthy, give Google clean and structured product data, and turn money-losing advertising into a profitable, scalable system across Google and Meta.

The System

A paid media system built from the feed up.

Product feed engineered with GoDataFeed. Instead of pushing raw Shopify data into Google, we processed, structured, and enriched the feed before it reached the Merchant Center. That meant precise Google taxonomy mapping, conditional identifier logic to prevent disapprovals, multipack parsing that read quantities straight out of product titles, expanded imagery per product, a category-specific specifications matrix, variant-level landing URLs, AI-generated product highlights, and a fully rebuilt, AI-synthesized title system that preserved critical details like bolt pattern and thread size while staying within Google's character limits. Merchant Center optimized for trust and visibility. We completed and verified brand and store information, uploaded the logo, added addresses and social profiles, and drove product data quality up until we reached full approval for the products on the client's site. We also ran Merchant Center Promotions, made possible by the precise filtering the GoDataFeed setup allowed. Tracking made trustworthy with Littledata. We moved to server-side tracking, sending accurate transaction and event data from Shopify into analytics, Google Ads, and Meta. This reduced the conversion loss caused by cookie restrictions, ad blockers, and missed browser events, controlled the impact of bot traffic, and gave us clean data to optimize on. Custom attribution and reporting. We built reporting that connected ad activity to business outcomes: top products, transaction rate, add-to-cart activity, revenue by source and channel, and the efficiency of each ad dollar. A custom attribution system surfaced data that standard Shopify and analytics reports do not show easily, including customer acquisition cost, first and repeat purchase value, lifetime value, repeat frequency, new versus returning behavior, and true paid return. With a limited budget, this visibility was what let us move money to exactly the right places. Google account built from scratch, around intent. We created the main full-catalog Shopping campaign, then separated priority products into their own campaigns by demand, margin, and strategic value. To solve the common "no impression" problem in large catalogs, we built a dynamic "Zombie" campaign that automatically pulled low- and no-impression products into their own campaign so hidden bestsellers could prove themselves. A dedicated Brand Protection campaign defended branded search from competitors bidding on the Metal FX name. Reseller price monitoring. Using custom tooling, we monitored Google Shopping to see which resellers were advertising Metal FX products, at what prices, and where they were undercutting the official store, then reporting it so the client could protect direct sales and margin. We provided this at no extra cost. Meta built in two layers. Using the same engineered feed, we launched dynamic remarketing as the bottom-of-funnel layer, which became the single most efficient part of the system. We then expanded into cold-audience prospecting with hook-driven product videos, turning Meta into a real source of new customers and brand awareness, not just a remarketing channel. One system, connected. The GoDataFeed feed sharpens Shopping and remarketing alike, Littledata's server-side data feeds both reporting and platform optimization, the custom attribution tells us where the real profit is, and Google and Meta reinforce each other across capture and creation.
