Explore The Atelier Approach:

Your Website Should Never Limit Your Business

The request was small. Move the size guide out of the modal and into the page, because it opens in a new tab on mobile and forty percent of the traffic is mobile. It took nine days, because the size guide is hard coded into a section that also renders the recently viewed carousel, and the carousel was installed by an app that was uninstalled fourteen months ago.

That is what an inherited theme actually costs.

Not a redesign.

The Atelier Perspective

A storefront is not a project that finishes. It is a thing a team touches every week for years, and almost every decision that feels technical is really a decision about how expensive next year will be. Where the content lives. Whether a merchandiser can build a landing page without a developer. How many scripts a marketer can add before the product page stops being fast.

So we build for the change that has not been requested yet. Sections and blocks a content editor can actually use. Metafields instead of hard coded copy. One component for the product card rather than four that look alike, so a change to the badge logic happens once. Integrations that fail loudly instead of quietly. It is unglamorous work and it is the difference between a site that improves and a site that gets worked around.

01

Build the Foundation Behind Every Commerce Experience

The foundation is the data model and the component library, not the homepage. Product taxonomy and metafield structure decided before templates get built, so filtering, personalization, and feeds all read the same attributes. A component library with real states: sold out, pre order, back order, bundle, subscription, gift with purchase. Get those wrong and every future template pays for it, usually in a merchandiser's afternoon rather than in a developer's estimate.

02

Give Your Team a Storefront They Can Operate

Most brands do not need more features, they need to stop filing tickets for their own website. We build templates so campaign pages, collection layouts, and landing pages are assembled from blocks the marketing team controls, with guardrails so the brand cannot be broken by a well meaning drag. The measure of a good build is how rarely you have to call us to change a word.

03

Make Every Future Change Easier to Deliver

Theme architecture is where speed of iteration is won or lost. We work in a version controlled theme with a documented section library, a staging environment that matches production, and release QA that runs before every push rather than after a customer finds it. Small changes ship in a day. Large changes ship without a fortnight of regression testing, because the work is isolated rather than tangled.

04

Build for the Future of Digital Commerce

Product data that is clean, complete, and marked up is the whole preparation for AI led discovery, and it is also just good commerce hygiene. Complete Product schema, accurate availability and pricing, structured attributes, feeds that do not drift from the storefront, and content a machine can parse. We build that layer properly and treat the rest as it arrives rather than as it is announced.

Our Ecommerce Website Development Services

Ecommerce Development Strategy & Technical Architecture

We decide what to build before we build it: platform fit, theme or headless, where content should live, which integrations are load bearing, and what the roadmap needs the architecture to allow in eighteen months. The output is a technical plan with sequencing and estimates, not a stack diagram. Most engagements find that one or two upstream decisions, usually product data structure and content modelling, determine two thirds of the future cost.

Shopify & BigCommerce Development

Most of our work is Shopify and Shopify Plus. On Plus specifically that means Shopify Functions for discount, delivery, and payment customization, checkout extensibility in place of the scripts and checkout.liquid that no longer exist, B2B on Plus where wholesale and DTC share a catalog, and Markets for multi currency and multi region. On BigCommerce we build stencil themes, catalog and price list structures, and the multi storefront patterns the platform handles well. We build BigCommerce because some brands are correctly on it, and we say so rather than quoting a migration.

Theme and Component Development

Custom themes and component libraries built to be edited: named sections, reusable blocks, metafield driven content, and design tokens matched to the design system rather than to one page. We build from the design system produced by our UI and UX design team, or from yours, and we build the component before we build the six pages that use it. Accessibility is part of the component, not a later audit: focus states, keyboard paths, labels, and contrast handled where they are cheap to handle.

Site Speed & Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are three specific numbers and each has a specific cause. Largest Contentful Paint is usually the hero image or a render blocking font. Interaction to Next Paint is usually third party JavaScript, and the culprit is usually an app the brand no longer uses. Cumulative Layout Shift is usually a banner or a review widget loading without reserved space. We measure with real user field data rather than a lab score, remove weight before we add caching, defer what can be deferred, and audit the app list twice a year because every app leaves something behind. A fast site is mostly a site carrying less.

Integrations & Technical Implementation

ERP, 3PL, subscriptions, loyalty, reviews, tax, PIM, and the customer data flowing into Klaviyo in a shape segments can be built on. We build integrations with error handling and alerting, idempotent retries where orders are involved, and a documented contract for what happens when the other system is down. Integrations do not usually break loudly. They drift, and someone notices in a reconciliation three weeks later.

QA and Launch Readiness

Before launch we test what actually breaks: checkout on real devices, discount and shipping logic at the edges, tax and address validation, subscription and B2B paths, tracking and consent, redirects, and every template at the breakpoints in your analytics rather than the ones in the design file. Launches are scheduled deliberately, with a rollback plan and someone awake.

Ongoing Ecommerce Development Support

Storefronts decay. Apps update, themes fall behind, a platform deprecates a feature, a script slows the product page by two hundred milliseconds a month for a year. Our retainers hold a standing hand on the site: monitored errors resolved before you see them, a prioritized backlog worked every cycle, conversion and usability fixes across PDP, cart, and checkout, and performance watched continuously. Most of what we fix, you never see, because we find it first.

Our Ecommerce Technology Ecosystem

We work across Shopify, Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, and Swap Commerce, with Hydrogen and Next.js where a build is headless.

The foundation is not the design. It is the data model, the component library, and the discipline of the releases.

A storefront is only as strong as the foundation behind it. Better development creates better possibilities.

Most of what we fix, you never see, because we find it first. Capacity is stated monthly and does not roll over. Requests run through a single queue with one owner on each side. New builds, replatforms, and major feature development are scoped as separate projects: retainers cover ongoing development capacity, not net-new builds.

FAQ

Everything you need to know about our Web Development approach.

What does a Shopify development agency do?

A Shopify development agency builds and maintains the storefront itself: theme and component development, custom functionality, integrations with ERP, 3PL, subscription, and loyalty systems, performance work, and the QA and release process around all of it. The useful ones also own the technical architecture decisions, because product data structure and content modelling determine what every later change costs.

How much does Shopify development cost?

Our development retainers run from 2,500 dollars a month for roughly 15 hours of capacity to 6,000 dollars a month for roughly 40 hours, with bespoke capacity quoted above that. New builds and replatforms are scoped separately as projects.

Do I need Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus is worth it when you need what only Plus gives you: checkout extensibility and Shopify Functions for custom discount, delivery, and payment logic, B2B running alongside DTC on one catalog, multiple storefronts or markets, and higher API limits. If your requirements are a faster site and better templates, standard Shopify does that, and the money is better spent on the build than on the plan.

Should we go headless?

Usually not, and the test is specific. Headless earns its cost when you run multiple storefronts or locales from one catalog, when editorial needs a real CMS, or when the front end must do something the theme layer cannot express. If the actual problem is a slow, cluttered theme, a well built Online Store 2.0 theme with the app debt removed is faster to reach and far cheaper to operate.

How long does a Shopify build take?

A focused theme build on an existing design system is typically six to ten weeks; a full Shopify Plus build with integrations, B2B, or multi market requirements usually runs three to five months. The variable is almost never the front end. It is product data readiness and the number of systems that must be integrated.
